Is moissanite found in nature?
Yes. It was discovered by Henri Moissanite while examining rock samples from a meteor crater located in Canyon Diablo, Arizona, in 1893.
What is moissanite made of?
Moissanite is silicon carbide. It is a mineral that is found in nature, but due to the scarcity, it is grown in labs to create moissanite crystals that are cut and faceted to mimic diamonds.
Moissanite has the beauty of a diamond and is almost as hard as a diamond, measuring 9.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness compared to a diamond that measures 10 on the scale making it durable enough to withstand everyday wear for the life of your ring. Further, the cost of moissanite is about a tenth of the cost of a genuine diamond. When you wear a moissanite, nobody will be able to tell it from a diamond with the naked eye.
What is a lab grown diamond?
A lab grown diamond is created in a lab from the same mineral as a diamond grown in nature - carbon. The lab mimics the process that occurs in nature to create a diamond with pressure and heat.
Why should I choose a lab grown diamond?
There are incredible abuses related to natural diamonds in certain countries. Rebel groups use the sale of diamonds to finance civil wars. And if that's not horrible enough, diamond mining is plagued by a wide range of ethical abuses. These include violence by governments, child labor, extreme poverty, and environmental devastation.
What makes your diamonds ethical?
The natural diamonds I use in all of my creations are sourced from companies who follow the Kimberly process. A process that was put in place in 2003 by a consortium in order to break the cycle of violence associated with the mining of diamonds. You can read more about the Kimberly process in my blog posted from 2016: https://dkbjewelry.com/blogs/news/144064583-diamonds-a-girls-best-friend
